The charming rural town of Anthony, Kansas is rooted in tradition and family values while having a multitude of modern amenities. Anthony is located approximately 56 miles southwest of Wichita, Kansas. Rich in agriculture, Anthony was established on the edge of a beautiful valley in 1878. Today, Anthony is thriving with a population of 2,400 and is known as a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
Main Street is the place for community activities, specialty shops, restaurants, hotels, a pharmacy w/soda fountain and the historic Anthony Theatre. The busy downtown businesses include clothing, gift shops, sporting goods, discount stores, hardware, decorating, and more. Whether a meal is being enjoyed at a local café or books are being perused in the 8000 sq. ft. public library, a slower pace can be found in this small town.

Anthony has a modern swimming pool, 4 public parks with picnic and playground facilities, ball diamond complex that offers playing fields for all ages, 6 hard surfaced tennis courts, 2 outdoor basketball courts, and a Municipal Hall for volleyball, indoor walking and community events. The Red Hills Track and Trails, roughly 60 acres of pasture and creek, offers trail riding and also a one-mile motocross track. A driving range and nine hole golf course is open year round, seven days a week, sun up to sun down. The 153-acre Anthony Lake, located one mile northwest of the city, has an array of activities. It features boating, fishing, leased shoreline cabin sites, camping areas, picnic tables, playground equipment, bike trails, a paved go-cart track, shelter houses, sand volleyball courts, horse shoe pits, restrooms and showers and a Scout retreat. Also located in Anthony is the Southern Kansas Bowhunter Range and facilities. Flying enthusiasts enjoy access to the municipal airport with hangar space.
Anthony Downs, an annual racing event held in July features horse and dog races. Fans in the beautiful open-air grandstand are treated to close-up racing providing plenty of wagering opportunities, and lots of racing action. The races wouldn’t be complete without the popular Kansas City BBQ Society Cook-Off and one of the newest traditions--the Ladies Derby Hat Parade contest. The Sunflower Balloon Fest, every Mother’s Day weekend, draws several thousand spectators to watch the competitive ballooning. Other events include the Harper County Fair, Show and Shine Car Show, Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt, Helping Hands & Hooves Trail Ride, Sunflower Arts & Crafts Show, church events, Halloween or Christmas Parade, and other holiday programs.
Social outreach extends past the borders of town. The heart of Anthony was made apparent when community members came together to create what became Kansas’ official 9/11 memorial that included steel from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon and soil from the United Flight 93 crash site in Pennsylvania.
The Anthony-Harper-Chaparral school district serves over 800 students. Anthony has an elementary school and junior high which serves grades pre-K through 8, and located between the two communities of Anthony and Harper is Chaparral High School. The district’s outstanding programs and educational opportunities have resulted in both student and staff recognition at the local and state level.
