Come explore the friendly community of Ellinwood! Located in central Kansas, Ellinwood is a community of 2,119 residents, with numerous attractions. Ellinwood has a rich history and is home to many antique shops and small businesses. Downtown Ellinwood once had many underground shops including barbershops, tailors, a meat market and a shoemaker which are available to tour today.

Ellinwood has an excellent local 3A school system with a K-8 Catholic school and a Christian preschool/daycare. Additionally, there are several colleges located within eighty miles of the community. The community is home to six churches, including Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist and United Church of Christ. Other denominations are located in nearby Great Bend.

Central Kansas is known as a “hunting and wildlife paradise,” with neighboring Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Wildlife Refuge. Numerous lakes surround the community, ideal for outdoor recreation. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,164 people, 906 households, and 594 families residing in the city. The median age was 41 years, with the average household size being 2.33 and the average family size being 2.95.



Ellinwood District Hospital, a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, has been in operation since 1952. The hospital, and adjacent Ellinwood Hospital Clinic, employees sixty health care professionals and provides numerous services to patients. Some of these services include inpatient acute care, skilled swing bed and intermediate swing bed care. Additional outpatient services include a 24 hour emergency room, full service laboratory, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, CT scan, endoscopy procedures, mobile sonography and mammography.

In the spring of 2007, Ellinwood District Hospital opened a new CT scan department. In an effort to prepare for the future implementation of electronic health records, the facility has updated radiology equipment and technology, as well as completed plumbing and electrical upgrades, made possible by a successful Kansas Tax Credit campaign.
