Welcome to Stafford, Kansas. Located in south central Kansas, Stafford is proud community with friendly people and diverse activities for all ages. Stafford is home to approximately 1,344 people who enjoy the hometown atmosphere, while being just a short drive to the larger cities of Hutchinson, Great Bend, Pratt and Wichita. Stafford County has a population of approximately 5,000. The county includes the towns of St. John, Stafford, Macksville, Hudson, Seward, Zenith and Radium.
Stafford Schools “GO TROJANS” is a class A School District that is well respected in the county and across the state. The district was one of the first schools in the state to initiate an innovative program, in which all students in grades 6-12 have a laptop computer to use 24/7. USD #349 has graduated several Merit Scholars over the past several years and, is able to offer a low student-teacher ratio. Many of our outstanding teachers have advance degrees in their area of specialty.
Stafford is known as the Gateway to Quivira Wildlife Refuge. This is a bird lover’s paradise it is 22,135 acres of prairie grass, saltwater marshes, and sand dunes, canals, dikes and timber. During spring migration, Quivira is the home for over 500,000 birds including sandhill cranes, Canadian geese, the endangered whooping crane, and all kinds of wildlife life including deer and bobcats. Nature lovers enjoy the hiking trails which include a wheelchair-accessible Migrant’s Mile Nature Trail and the scenic Birdhouse Boulevard. Quivira also has a Visitor’s Center with in unique displays.
Celebrations and events create the feeling of community in this quaint town. Annually, Stafford holds Oktoberfest which is a weekend of parades, craft fair, class reunions and many other events. Stafford County Fair is held every summer this is a full week of events from arts and crafts, to livestock shows, food, concerts and a demolition derby. Later in the summer Stafford Saddle Club puts on a rodeo which brings in cowboys and cowgirls from across the state. Stafford is also served by six churches. Stafford has a stable economy because it is an agricultural community and is strong in oil production.
