Welcome to Stafford, Kansas. Located in south central Kansas, Stafford is proud community with friendly people and diverse activities for all ages. Stafford is home to approximately 1,344 people who enjoy the hometown atmosphere, while being just a short drive to the larger cities of Hutchinson, Great Bend, Pratt and Wichita. Stafford County has a population of approximately 5,000. The county includes the towns of St. John, Stafford, Macksville, Hudson, Seward, Zenith and Radium.

Stafford offers a wide range of activities for people of all interest. Stafford has a nine hole county golf course, some of the best hunting and fishing in the state as well as a bowling alley located on Main Street. Residents of Stafford also enjoy several restaurants and many other unique businesses, including antique shops and a historic movie theater, which shows the latest movies. The Henderson Houses which are Bed and Breakfast complex, consisting of remodeled historic Victorian homes and conference center—this is a distinctive attraction which brings in visitors from across the county.

Stafford Schools “GO TROJANS” is a class A School District that is well respected in the county and across the state. The district was one of the first schools in the state to initiate an innovative program, in which all students in grades 6-12 have a laptop computer to use 24/7. USD #349 has graduated several Merit Scholars over the past several years and, is able to offer a low student-teacher ratio. Many of our outstanding teachers have advance degrees in their area of specialty.

Stafford is known as the Gateway to Quivira Wildlife Refuge. This is a bird lover’s paradise it is 22,135 acres of prairie grass, saltwater marshes, and sand dunes, canals, dikes and timber. During spring migration, Quivira is the home for over 500,000 birds including sandhill cranes, Canadian geese, the endangered whooping crane, and all kinds of wildlife life including deer and bobcats. Nature lovers enjoy the hiking trails which include a wheelchair-accessible Migrant’s Mile Nature Trail and the scenic Birdhouse Boulevard. Quivira also has a Visitor’s Center with in unique displays.

Celebrations and events create the feeling of community in this quaint town. Annually, Stafford holds Oktoberfest which is a weekend of parades, craft fair, class reunions and many other events. Stafford County Fair is held every summer this is a full week of events from arts and crafts, to livestock shows, food, concerts and a demolition derby. Later in the summer Stafford Saddle Club puts on a rodeo which brings in cowboys and cowgirls from across the state. Stafford is also served by six churches. Stafford has a stable economy because it is an agricultural community and is strong in oil production.

Stafford County Hospital’s (SCH) mission is to provide an environment of excellence in which local physicians, with support and assistance of qualified specialists and hospital staff, can provide the best possible medical care to the people of Stafford County and the surrounding areas. SCH is a 25 bed critical access hospital that has a dedicated, skilled and caring staff of 58 that provides all levels of inpatient and outpatient care. Several specialty clinics are offered which include a Well Women Clinic, Colonoscopy and Endoscopy Clinic, Podiatry Clinic, Orthopedic Clinic and Chiropractic Clinic. The Emergency Room is staffed by qualified practitioners 24 hours a day seven days a week for all medical emergencies.

The hospital has been in operation at the current location since 1961. As a member of the American Hospital Association, Stafford County Hospital has accepted an award for their hard work and dedication. SCH has also received a Merit Award from the Kansas Department of Commerce for Business Appreciation.

Stafford County Hospital has a state of the art Laboratory Department. They can accommodate patients with the capabilities of performing most lab test as well as, conducting test for over 250 doctors state-wide and several out-of-state doctors.

The experienced and caring therapists at SCH have superior credentials and assist in all types of injuries and medical conditions. They offer Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy on an in-patient, out-patient or home health basis.


Our technology advanced Radiology Department provides accurate and timely results, without a commute to the people of Stafford County and the surrounding areas by offering services such as Diagnostic Digital Radiology, EKG’s and CT’s. Several mobile units such as Sonography, Mammography and MRI’s are offered.

Stafford County Hospital’s Home Health Service has wide range of services offered to home bound patients by licensed and caring nurses. Services include assessment and teaching, dressing changes, wound care, foley catheters, injections, IV medications and therapy, diabetes management, medication instruction and management, draw lab work, assess oxygen saturation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, assist with bathing and hygiene.

Every spring, in cooperation with the Stafford County Health Department, the hospital offers a county wide health fair. The health fair provides medical services, lab test, and radiology services at a lesser fee to all patients. Some of the test include PSA test for men, EKG’s, and mammograms for women.
